Passenger and freight transport are significant contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for almost 25% of the total. Through ERTICO platforms, projects and partners, we are a key contributor to delivering cleaner, greener and more efficient climate-neutral mobility and transport.
The world of Clean and Eco- mobility is changing rapidly, from an increasing number of cities implementing low emission zones to the fact that, in 10 years, electric vehicles will have a range of 1,000 kilometres on a single fast charge.
ERTICO has a comprehensive approach to advancing sustainable mobility, reducing pollution and improving air quality, extending beyond technological innovation to reflect user requirements, inclusiveness and societal needs. The Just Transition Mechanism (JTM) is an important tool to ensure the move to a climate-neutral economy happens in a fair way, leaving no one behind.
A decarbonised future will be one of the more efficient transport systems and greener mobility infrastructure, using zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) including e-buses, e-trucks, micro-mobility and battery electric frugal cars.
We also track developments in other fuels: for example, OEMs developing alternative internal combustion engines that use pure hydrogen, meaning no harmful tailpipe emissions – only water.
Our work aligns with the 2Zero Partnership (towards zero-emission road transport), which includes being involved in co-drafting its ambitious Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). 2Zero aims to accelerate the transition to zero tailpipe emission road mobility through R&I, for all types of passenger and freight vehicles, and with an integrated system approach covering both Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV). Many projects in ERTICO’s portfolio come under the 2Zero banner.
While supporting the EU emission targets is key for our roadmaps, it also highlights important milestones in the collaborative journey towards the widespread adoption of zero-emission mobility. The electrification of transport and electro-mobility is of course central; we are actively involved in advancing the development and deployment of interoperable EV infrastructure and eco-mobility solutions, integrated with user-centric approaches such as Mobility as a Service (MaaS).
Our Clean & Eco-Mobility Roadmap for 2035
ERTICO’s Roadmap for 2035 in Clean and Eco-Mobility is marked by key milestones. Through Innovative Platforms and Partnership Projects run under this focus area, ERTICO is working to support the achievement of these milestones and the vision of widespread zero-emission mobility in both urban and non-urban areas.
Current Objectives in the area of Clean & Eco-Mobility
Develop a common approach to the evaluation of ITS deployment as a tool for emissions reduction: ERTICO is working on developing methodologies and tools for assessing the CO2 impacts of different smart mobility applications, in order to assist policy and investment decisions. We seek to achieve consensus on measurement, assessment and evaluation techniques to allow results from different deployments to be more easily benchmarked.
Contribute to smart mobility solutions being recognised as a tool for reducing emissions: ERTICO is committed to supporting the development, testing and measurement of smart mobility solutions that contribute to emissions reduction, in particular CO2. We analyse and publicise the benefits, success conditions and lessons learnt from trials and deployments of smart mobility applications through studies and papers.
Achieve interoperability of electro-mobility: ERTICO’s Innovation Platform eMI3 works to create a standard for EV charging and service. We recognise the importance of having a de facto standard and strive to establish the eMI3 as the de facto standard for EV charging. Through eMI3, ERTICO is working on defining clear pan-European interoperability rules and promoting that public authorities’ procurement for EV charging stations take eMI3 standards into account.
Contribute to creating an ICT network with seamless and interoperable electro-mobility services: Developing and testing solutions for seamless services for EV users is of utmost importance for the uptake of electric vehicles. ERTICO is working to develop a “hyper network” for electro-mobility, including a pan-European roaming framework. We recognise the importance of integrating electro-mobility into Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and work toward this goal as well as for fostering the uptake of smart electro-mobility solutions in cities.
Creating a cleaner eco-mobility future for all: ERTICO’s role in driving decarbonisation includes supporting R&D for innovative lower-carbon solutions and facilitating their inclusion into transport systems and future mobility through multi-stakeholder partnerships, platforms and projects. The scale of the challenge and the opportunities for change are clear. The first phase of the ERTICO City Moonshot initiative interviewed 150 cities worldwide, with the results relating to clean and eco-mobility including:
-
- 32% of cities have declared a climate emergency and a further 16% intend to.
- 89% of cities measure air quality and 37% adjust their transport policies depending on air quality levels, for example by incentivising public transport.
- 73% of cities have estimated GHG emissions from transport.
- 92% of cities are taking transport-related action to address the climate crisis, the most common being additional cycle lanes, increased investment in public transport, and establishing charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs).
The future will be greener: ERTICO remains at the forefront of ensuring public and private partners work together on a detailed roadmap to meet ambitious targets, creating a cleaner eco-mobility future for all.
