ECO AND CLEAN MOBILITY

Reducing environmental impact

About Clean & Eco-Mobility

Smart mobility innovations can make a major contribution towards reducing the impact of transport on the environment, particularly in terms of reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Transport currently accounts for almost a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide and making mobility more sustainable is a key policy objective of governments, EU and international organisations.

Deployment of intelligent transport solutions can help reduce the carbon footprint and emissions by helping transport users and providers make smarter decisions. To achieve this, systems and services need to be made more efficient and attractive through greater interoperability and better information. It is from this angle that ERTICO approaches its work in the area of Clean and Eco Mobility. Innovative technologies, connectivity and automation can drive the decarbonisation of transport, improve the use of cleaner technologies for better air quality and tackle congestion.

ERTICO works with and supports its Partners to develop greener services and products, assess the impact on the environment, and work with other stakeholders to facilitate effective deployment of these solutions. ERTICO works on the development of electro-mobility and associated services such as interoperable electric vehicle charging.

A major transport objective of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow 2021 was to show that the transition to zero-emission road transport technology has reached a tipping point. This step-change towards mass-market clean mobility will focus on electric vehicles, necessary infrastructures, and the greater multimodality and shared mobility ecosystem. It will significantly contribute to the European Green Deal, making Europe climate neutral by 2050. In the shorter term, clean air policies in cities will change travel patterns and impose the ‘polluter pays’ principle. Evidence-based guidelines describe ways to relieve transport pollution for a healthier population, a better quality of life, and reduce CO₂ emissions significantly. Pricing, taxation, education and awareness will contribute to adopting greener behaviour. The ways in which transport is managed today will change accordingly as transport decision-makers increasingly set environmental targets.

Our Clean & Eco-Mobility Roadmap for 2035

ERTICO’s Roadmap for 2035 in Clean and Eco-Mobility is marked by key milestones. Through Innovative Platforms and Partnership Projects run under this focus area, ERTICO is working to support the achievement of these milestones and the vision of widespread zero-emission mobility in both urban and non-urban areas.

Current Objectives in the area of Clean & Eco-Mobility

Develop a common approach to the evaluation of ITS deployment as a tool for emissions reduction
ERTICO is working on developing methodologies and tools for assessing the CO2 impacts of different smart mobility applications, in order to assist policy and investment decisions. We seek to achieve consensus on measurement, assessment and evaluation techniques to allow results from different deployments to be more easily benchmarked.

Contribute to smart mobility solutions being recognised as a tool for reducing emissions
ERTICO is committed to supporting the development, testing and measurement of smart mobility solutions that contribute to emissions reduction, in particular CO2. We analyse and publicise the benefits, success conditions and lessons learnt from trials and deployments of smart mobility applications through studies and papers.

Achieve interoperability of electro-mobility
ERTICO’s Innovation Platform eMI3 works to create a standard for EV charging and service. We recognise the importance of having a de facto standard and strive of establishing the eMI3 as the de facto standard for EV charging. Through eMI3, ERTICO is working on defining clear pan-European interoperability rules and promoting that public authorities procurement for EV charging stations take eMI3 standards into account.

Contribute to creating an ICT network with seamless and interoperable electro-mobility services
Developing and testing solutions for seamless services for EV users is of outmost importance for the uptake of electric vehicles. ERTICO is working to develop a “hyper network” for electro-mobility, including a pan-European roaming framework. We recognise the importance of integrating electro-mobility into Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and work toward this goal as well as for fostering the uptake of smart electro-mobility solutions in cities.

Creating a cleaner eco-mobility future for all
ERTICO’s role in driving decarbonisation includes supporting R&D for innovative lower carbon solutions and facilitating their inclusion into transport systems and future mobility through multi-stakeholder partnerships, platforms and projects. The scale of the challenge and the opportunities for change are clear. The first phase of the ERTICO City Moonshot initiative interviewed 150 cities worldwide, with the results relating to clean and eco-mobility including:

    • 32% of cities have declared a climate emergency and a further 16% intend to.
    • 89% of cities measure air quality and 37% adjust their transport policies depending on air quality levels, for example by incentivising public transport.
    • 73% of cities have estimated GHG emissions from transport.
    • 92% of cities are taking transport-related action to address the climate crisis, the most common being additional cycle lanes, increased investment in public transport, and establishing charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs).

The future will be greener: ERTICO remains at the forefront of ensuring public and private partners work together on a detailed roadmap to meet ambitious targets, creating a cleaner eco-mobility future for all.
