As preparations continue for the 33rd ITS World Congress in Birmingham, the UK's Minister for Local Transport, Lilian Greenwood MP, has highlighted the event as a significant opportunity to showcase British transport innovation and demonstrate how technology is helping to deliver safer, smarter and more connected mobility.
In a video message shared during the ITS UK Parliamentary Reception on Tuesday 16 June, the Minister reaffirmed the Department for Transport's support for the Congress, describing it as a "fantastic opportunity to showcase UK transport innovations" to a global audience.
The Department for Transport is supporting the ITS World Congress 2027, which will bring together transport technology leaders, policymakers, public authorities, researchers and innovators from around the world in Birmingham from 25–29 October 2027.
Delivering easier, safer and faster journeys for citizens and communities
Reflecting on the role of intelligent transport technologies in shaping future mobility, Greenwood noted that the Congress provides an opportunity to demonstrate how the UK is "seizing opportunities and tackling challenges to better connect people and to keep them safe."
The Minister linked the event to the Government's wider ambitions for transport, emphasising the importance of delivering easier, safer and faster journeys for citizens and communities across the country.
She also highlighted the growing role of innovation in achieving national road safety objectives. Referring to the recently published road safety strategy, Greenwood said, “We need smarter solutions and more use of technology” to achieve the government’s ambitions to reduce deaths and serious injuries on the road network, a topic that will be featured prominently throughout the Congress Programme.
Digital Innovation to Improve Mobility for Users
Among the initiatives highlighted were the Connected Vehicle Services Framework, which aims to establish nationwide standards for introducing data-driven services on the road network, alongside ongoing work to digitise traffic regulation orders and traffic control information. The Minister also pointed to services such as the National Parking Platform, the Bus Open Data Service and Street Manager as examples of how digital innovation is improving mobility for users.
Addressing the intelligent transport sector directly, Greenwood recognised the contribution of organisations across the ecosystem, stating: "Your dedication is making that happen right now."
As we continue the preparations for Birmingham 2027, the Minister's message reflects the growing recognition of the Congress as a global platform for advancing intelligent transport solutions, fostering international collaboration and showcasing innovations that can improve mobility, safety and sustainability worldwide.
Organised by ERTICO – ITS Europe, and hosted by Transport for West Midlands and West Midlands Combined Authority, the ITS World Congress 2027 will provide a unique opportunity for governments, cities, industry leaders and researchers to exchange knowledge, build partnerships and demonstrate the technologies shaping the future of transport.
