ERTICO is pleased to announce that Transport for London has joined its Partnership.
Transport for London (TfL) is the integrated transport authority for London, keeping the city moving efficiently and safely. TfL is responsible for managing and operating the city’s public transport network, including the London Underground (commonly known as the Tube), London Overground, the Elizabeth line, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), London Buses, London Trams, London River Services, and Victoria Coach Station. In addition to operations, TfL also plays a regulatory role by overseeing taxis and private hire vehicles such as Uber and managing Dial-a-Ride services for individuals with mobility challenges.
TfL manages London’s road network, maintaining major roads, controlling over 6,000 traffic signals, and overseeing infrastructure for cycling, walking, and road safety. It also operates fare systems, such as the Oyster card and contactless payments, while setting fare structures and ensuring accessibility across all modes of transport.
Strategically, TfL implements the Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy, oversees large-scale infrastructure projects such as Crossrail (now the Elizabeth line), and plans for future urban growth with a focus on sustainability and environmental impact. Funding for TfL comes from a combination of passenger fares, commercial revenue, and government grants. The organisation is governed by a board appointed by the Mayor of London. TfL is essentially the beating heart of London’s mobility, connecting millions of people daily across one of the world’s most complex urban transport networks.
We are delighted to welcome Transport for London into the ERTICO Partnership. As one of the world’s leading urban mobility authorities, TfL brings experience in building and managing integrated, inclusive, and sustainable transport systems. Their decision to join ERTICO marks a significant step toward deepening cross-sector collaboration, sharing knowledge across borders, and accelerating innovation in ITS. We look forward to the valuable insights TfL will contribute and the shared progress we can achieve together in shaping the future of smart and sustainable mobility.
said Joost Vantomme, CEO of ERTICO – ITS Europe.
The ERTICO Partnership bridges the gaps between stakeholders across the ITS community to help make mobility safer, more efficient and sustainable. Together, we lead the digital transformation of transport through the development of cutting-edge technologies, new services and innovative mobility solutions to move people and goods in smarter ways. Our Partners share the joint mission to actively promote sustainable collaborative relations with EU institutions and policymakers by connecting local and regional transport organisations with national authorities.
TfL maintains contact with a network of peer cities with which knowledge is exchanged and expertise shared, from which we are able to inform strategic and tactical operational decision making. However, TfL now wishes to widen and deepen this network, as well as engage with private companies and institutions, and joining ERTICO enables much more effectively than trying to do this alone. TfL also feels that its own experiences, together with everything a vibrant global city environment brings to the ITS discussion, will help others within the ERTICO partnership in facing their own challenges. In addition, TfL would benefit from the access to innovation and research that ERTICO membership brings, as well as the ability to better influence policy, align with climate targets and be well placed to take advantage of project funding opportunities. Overall TfL feels that this is a long overdue step, and one that should bring benefits to all within ERTICO and beyond.
Carl Eddleston, TfL's Director of Network Management and Resilience, said:
Joining the ERTICO Partnership marks an exciting new chapter for TfL as we continue to innovate and collaborate on the future of intelligent mobility. London is a global city with complex transport needs, and we believe our experience in delivering integrated, inclusive, and sustainable transport solutions can offer valuable insights to the ERTICO community. We look forward to further strengthening our strategic approach to ITS, support climate goals, and ensure London remains at the forefront of smart, connected transport.
