The PTV Group, part of the global umbrella brand Umovity, is expanding its automated traffic model creation with an innovative, AI-powered function: PTV Model2Go TripGenAI. This new tool takes over the traffic generation step within macroscopic demand models, thus transforming data significantly faster than before into sound decision-making tools for traffic planning and mobility strategies.
Model2Go TripGenAI enables the precise calculation of the number of generated routes within any planning area in Germany. The necessary structural data, such as population and employment data, are determined using AI. Furthermore, analyses from the nationwide mobility survey "Mobility in Germany (MiD)" are incorporated into the calculation to realistically depict mobility behavior.
The population data is based on the German census and is displayed on a 100-meter grid. A statistical method creates a virtual twin of the population and divides the data into differentiated demographic groups – pupils, students, employed persons, unemployed persons, and retirees – each according to car availability. This fine segmentation enables a realistic representation of the different needs and activity patterns – from school route analysis to commuter forecasting.
“At the heart of every traffic model lies the question: Where do roads originate – and why? PTV Model2Go TripGenAI provides the answer automatically,” explains Mogens Abel-Bache, CTO of the PTV Group, part of Umovity. “By standardizing data, methods, and model architectures, TripGenAI reduces costs, effort, and complexity – making model-based planning faster, more affordable, and therefore also feasible for smaller cities.”
Innovative addition to the Model2Go product family
TripGenAI adds another key component to the Model2Go ecosystem:
- Model2Go Supply provides the basis: multimodal transport network models, including public transport, road and bicycle networks, zones, interchange points and points of interest (POIs).
- Model2Go Demand optionally adds empirical demand data (based on Floating Car Data or mobile network data) to the system.
- Model2Go TripGenAI introduces automated traffic generation as the basis for further modeling steps such as Destination Choice, Mode Choice and Assignment.
TripGenAI's results are directly integrated into PTV Visa, enabling planners to seamlessly proceed with steps such as destination selection, modal split, and traffic allocation – all without manual data preparation.
Market launch in Germany
PTV Model2Go TripGenAI is aimed at public administrations and consulting firms developing sustainable, data-driven mobility strategies, as well as transport companies and associations seeking to optimize their accessibility analyses and service planning. By automating traffic generation and standardizing data structures and methods, the tool accelerates project implementation, improves reproducibility, and ensures high data quality, regardless of the size of the region under consideration.
The first rollout of PTV Model2Go TripGenAI is taking place in Germany, based on extensive, AI-powered spatial and demographic data. Introduction in other European countries is planned for 2026 – a further step towards a fully integrated Model2Go ecosystem that links data, demand, and strategic traffic planning through automation.
