The first half of 2026 has been marked by significant milestones across ERTICO's projects, platforms and communities. From advancing Europe's mobility data ecosystem and launching new research initiatives to strengthening knowledge exchange and supporting safer, smarter mobility systems, teams across ERTICO have continued to translate innovation into tangible impact.
To capture this journey, we invited our colleagues to share the moments that defined their last six months. Their reflections paint a picture of a dynamic, interconnected ecosystem driven by a shared, passionate commitment to a smarter, safer tomorrow.
Building knowledge and accelerating innovation through digital tools
Knowledge sharing remains at the heart of ERTICO's mission, with several initiatives expanding access to expertise and supporting capacity building across the ITS community.
For Anaïs Baudrier, one of the key highlights has been the continued development of the SMARTIN Knowledge Base Navigator (KBN), an online platform designed to support innovation across the transport sector:
“Developed from the collective expertise of the SMARTIN consortium, the Knowledge Base Navigator is an online platform that was designed to support capacity building and knowledge exchange, and it will continue to grow as the project advances.”
The KBN provides a searchable catalogue of digital tools and solutions covering key areas, including infrastructure health monitoring, traffic and mobility management, and multimodal travel. Through its search and comparison features, users can explore solutions based on transport mode, project objectives, technology readiness level, and key capabilities such as real-time operation, digital twin applications, and open data support.
In parallel, the CCAMbassador project launched the new CAD Knowledge Base 2.0, featuring new sections, a renewed interface, and improved usability. The updated platform now includes new materials supporting the uptake, adoption, and integration of EU-CEM, as well as the Global CCAM Observatory, implemented by the JRC and DG RTD, further strengthening access to knowledge and resources for the CCAM community.
This focus on knowledge sharing also expanded through the ERTICO Academy. Roozbeh Mohammadi highlights the successful launch of the first joint webinar with the ITS National Networks, bringing together experts to discuss resilience in intelligent transport systems. Simultaneously, collaborations with projects including the NAPCORE Academy and Next E-Truck have broadened the Academy's course offering, strengthening its role as a growing hub for professional learning across the ITS community.
Strengthening data ecosystems and interoperability across Europe
As data continues to be a central pillar of ERTICO’s work, Frank Daems highlights key milestones achieved across Innovation Platforms and projects focusing on improving the exchange, accessibility, and use of mobility data:
“A major milestone was achieved as the TN-ITS membership collectively adopted a new strategy that combines AI capabilities with Data Space technologies to modernise and scale the deployment of authoritative road information services across Europe.”
The EAVP community also jointly advanced APDS v5, delivering a common standard for seamless interaction between parking operators and drivers:
“The specification supports the complete digital parking journey, enables the practical implementation of urban traffic circulation plans, and creates a shared basis for interoperable deployment of Automated Valet Parking services across Europe.”
Across Europe, NAPCORE successfully launched its Academy Partner Programme, creating a structured platform for knowledge sharing and alignment across all partners. The initiative also established the foundation for a Public Programme to disseminate NAPCORE results throughout the European ITS community. In parallel, significant contributions were made in advancing data quality in Working Group 4 and to the coordinated alignment of TN-ITS and DATEX II within the CEN standardisation framework within Working Group 5.
Meanwhile, deployEMDS successfully launched a European knowledge-sharing programme, training activities, and kicked off its final dissemination event, empowering public authorities and industry to accelerate the adoption of the European Mobility Data Space:
“The project translated practical city use cases into a reusable deployment framework, delivering governance models, data products and technical building blocks that support the scalable implementation of the Common European Mobility Data Space.”
Additional progress was achieved through TISGRADE, which successfully established the pre-deployment framework for Maximum Speed Validation services, bringing together road authorities, map providers, vehicle manufacturers, and technology partners. The agreed deployment approach creates the foundation for harmonised implementation across Europe, improving the reliability of speed limit information and supporting safer, ISA-enabled driving.
ERTICO also reinforced its leadership in mobility data by securing the European CCAM Data Space initiative, creating a federated platform that connects leading CCAM data spaces with the German MDS and French EONA mobility data spaces. Building on EMDS-compliant governance, trusted data exchange, and NAPCORE data chain concepts, the initiative establishes the foundation for a secure European data backbone supporting large-scale CCAM deployment.
As ERTICO benefited from targeted EU support through the EU Boost Service and the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC), Jose Rodriguez shares about SYNERGIES project reached an important milestone in designing and strengthening the exploitation pathways for its platform. This support will help ensure that the platform's data-driven capabilities and CCAM solutions are effectively translated into sustainable business models, market uptake, and broader ecosystem adoption.
By leveraging these services, ERTICO is better positioned to define exploitation routes aligned with EU data space strategies, strengthen the platform's value proposition for partners and stakeholders, and create a scalable foundation for future innovation and deployment activities in cooperative and automated mobility. This initiative also reinforces ERTICO's strategic leadership in turning research results into tangible, exploitable mobility solutions.
Creating the foundations for safer and smarter mobility
Through projects focusing on road safety, including CAMBER, EvoRoads, and FRODDO, Julie Castermans, Nikolaos Tsampieris, Euripides Sakellariou, Roberta Rapagnani, Gino Querini, and Céline Lefort contributed to strengthening cooperation between EU-funded initiatives working towards safer and more sustainable mobility.
In February 2026, the EU Road Safety Cluster published a white paper bringing together insights from several EU-funded projects advancing road safety and automated mobility across Europe. As coordinator of the EvoRoads and FRODDO projects and a partner in CAMBER, ERTICO contributed to the publication, which highlights the importance of integrated, high-quality data in supporting proactive, evidence-based road safety policies and advancing the EU’s Vision Zero ambition.
Separately, the EvoRoads project has expanded its Advisory Board with new members and strengthened its collaboration with sister projects iDriving and CAMBER, including a joint session at the ITS European Congress in Istanbul. The project is currently organising further joint activities with its sister projects, including a series of online workshops that will continue to strengthen collaboration across the European road safety community.
Through CAMBER’s role in leading the Cluster from July 2026, ERTICO continues to support communication, dissemination, and collaboration activities across participating projects, helping amplify shared knowledge and results.
NEXUS delivered its External Advisory Board during TRA in Budapest, Hungary, with important stakeholders from rail and metro systems. It has collaborated fruitfully with the Horizon Booster Service in the field of exploitation, communication, and more. It is currently finalising its activities and planning to deliver its final event in Brussels, Belgium, in September 2026.
Similarly CHORUS participated in several high-level events not last the ITS European Congress, the POLIS Conference and several CCAM sectorial events, is currently planning the development of its training modules and launching its Community of Practice (CoP). It has also carried out the Technical and societal requirements analysis and specification and defined Use Cases, Test Scenarios, and preliminary ODDs
The FRODDO project also reached an important milestone with its fourth General Assembly in Porto in June, hosted by INESC TEC.
“Following a successful mid-term review with the Project Officer in Brussels in February, the project reached Month 24 in strong shape, with all 15 deliverables submitted on time and approved as submitted. Milestone 4, including the first field trial results, was also accepted, providing a clear view of progress achieved and the next steps ahead.” comments George Christou.
George also shares the mid-year highlight for ENVELOPE, which is now in its final year and continued moving from research towards real-world testing. The project presented its work on AI-driven safety and 6G-ready mobility at the ITS European Congress in Istanbul and participated in the EuCNC and 6G Summit in Málaga, where it co-organised a workshop with SNS CO-OP and other SNS projects. Updates to the project website are also being rolled out to better reflect the results ENVELOPE is delivering across its trial sites in Italy, the Netherlands, and Greece.
