Kapsch TrafficCom, a global provider of intelligent transportation solutions, proudly announces a groundbreaking pilot project in Vitoria, Spain.
This initiative aims to enhance urban mobility by providing transit signal priority to municipal buses through advanced connected vehicle technology. This innovation improves bus speeds, allowing for shorter intervals and thus bringing Vitoria citizens and tourists to their destinations more reliably and faster, ensuring a more comfortable public transit experience.
The pilot project, which was concluded in April 2025, seamlessly integrates Kapsch TrafficCom’s cutting-edge system with existing traffic management tools. Designed to prioritise a specific bus line (line 5) at a key intersection, the system operates entirely in the background, allowing drivers to focus solely on the road while the technology manages traffic light prioritisation automatically.
“This pilot program represents a significant step towards smarter, more efficient urban mobility,” says Carolin Treichl, EVP EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom. “By reducing delays for public buses, we're not only improving public transport efficiency but also enhancing the overall commuter experience.”
The benefits of this innovative system are twofold – offering greater agility for public transportation and easier implementation and maintenance for city authorities due to minimal construction requirements. While currently limited to a single intersection and bus line, the technology is fully scalable, paving the way for future deployments across larger urban areas.
