In March, the JULIA project launched an Open Call for public transport operators to pilot its space-enabled innovation across different cities. Under ERTICO’s leadership, the submission process has now concluded with five selected candidates that will receive funding and support from JULIA experts to test different applications. Following the evaluation process, the selected organisations are:
- Dolomiti Bus Spa (Belluno, Italy)
- TRANSPORTS ELECTRICS INTERURBANS, S.A. (TEISA) (Girona, Spain)
- Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois (CTS) (Strasbourg, France)
- Asociația Română pentru Smart City și Mobilitate (ARSC), mandated by CTP Iași (Romania)
- Manisa Metropolitan Municipality (Türkiye)
Each organisation will receive €15,000 in funding together with technical support from the JULIA experts to implement a pilot over the coming months. The initiative is an important step towards bringing project outcomes into real operational environments beyond its pilot sites and its scalability across Europe.
The selected candidates will demonstrate five JULIA applications. Three of them will involve the installation of Galileo-enabled hardware, developed by INIT and GeoNumerics, to improve vehicle positioning, localisation and demand-responsive transport (DRT) operations. A third application also integrates Nemi's Driver App to support a more efficient DRT pick-up process. The other two applications are software-based, developed remotely by EarthPulse, helping transport authorities monitor air quality and assess the impacts of climate change on public transport operations.
For ERTICO, the Open Call reflects its commitment to helping innovative mobility solutions move beyond research and into everyday transport operations. By supporting additional cities and operators in testing JULIA technologies, the initiative contributes to the wider uptake, replication and large-scale deployment of innovations that can make public transport more reliable, efficient and sustainable.
The pilots will run over the coming months and provide valuable insights into how these solutions perform in different environments, helping inform their future deployment across Europe.
