The Austrian Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) has a long-term strategy and vision regarding the efficient and effective use of ITS Solutions. For over 15 years, telematics, ITS and new services in mobility have been a focus area of specific research and development as well as deployment measures.

The actual national ITS Action Plan – as national strategy – has been developed in 2011 and serves as a guideline for specific national funding programs and initiatives as well as for international activities. In 2013, bmvit put in place the national ITS Law, in order to fulfil the obligations derived from the EU ITS directive. In 2014, an updated “catalogue of measures” has been developed together with all relevant national stakeholders (in cooperation with ITS Austria).

Key achievements within the recent years have been the deployment of a nationwide Geodata-service for Transport (GIP), a nationwide multimodal real- time Traveller Information System (VAO) and the development and deployment of C-ITS on Vienna´s Highway Network (Testbed Telematics) and along the European C-ITS Corridor from Rotterdam to Vienna (Eco_AT).
